bobdylan-oneWhen coffee and music come together they produce magic. There are so many songs but the most poignant and my absolute favourite for decades has been this one by Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris.

And since I have one more cup of coffee every day – it’s a song that plays hauntingly in my head.

A bit of research and this is what Wiki has revealed. I quote.

“One More Cup of Coffee” tells the tale of a girl whose family are gypsies and drifters, and of the man who must leave her to enter the “valley below”. The narrator describes a character who is beautiful: “your eyes are like two jewels in the sky” but for whom the narrator’s love and admiration are not reciprocated (“but I don’t sense affection no gratitude or love, your loyalty is not to me but to the stars above”). The song deals with themes of abandonment; the apparent end of a relationship and the concept of a coming journey.

Of course there are some biographical nuances in the song but even if you leave them alone the song creates a story – in the words of the song itself – mysterious and dark.

Bob Dylan has had many hit songs and of course this song has had many covers , but this version in my opinion is the most soul-stirring of all.

Long after you’ve heard it, it keeps going on and on in your heart. That song of longing and parting, of wanting to stay back for one more cup of coffee but having to leave for ‘the valley below‘. All of us have been there some time. And Bob Dylan reminds you of that place by sensitively strumming on our heartstrings with his guitar and his words.

Here’s the song and the lyrics below.

Your breath is sweet
Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky
Your back is straight, your hair is smooth
On the pillow where you lie
But I don’t sense affection
No gratitude or love
Your loyalty is not to me
But to the stars above
One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go
To the valley below
Your daddy he’s an outlaw
And a wanderer by trade
He’ll teach you how to pick and choose
And how to throw the blade
He oversees his kingdom
So no stranger does intrude
His voice it trembles as he calls out
For another plate of food
One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go
To the valley below
Your sister sees the future
Like your mama and yourself
You’ve never learned to read or write
There’s no books upon your shelf
And your pleasure knows no limits
Your voice is like a meadowlark
But your heart is like an ocean
Mysterious and dark
One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go
To the valley below

Do you have a song that stays with you?
