If there is a song that I remember off and on and especially when I travelling, it is this one. It’s haunting melody is memorable in its simplicity and its lyrics. And somewhere in it’s uncomplicated way it touches a raw nerve, tugs on to your heartstrings and lays the soul bare.

Recently it made it’s appearance in my head again and as I searched for it I realized how many covers had been done. George Benson, The Corrs, Aretha Franklin, Olivia Newton John… the list seems endless. But the best cover of this song, according to me has to be that of George Michael.

The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I’ve seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door

The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here
Let me know the way

Many times I’ve been alone
And many times I’ve cried
Any way you’ll never know
The many ways I’ve tried

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don’t keep me waiting here
Lead me to your door
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Here’s the original one by Paul McCartney – when he was still with The Beatles:

Let’s not be longwinded on this. Have a listen to both and tell me which one you like better.
